About us
Burning River Video is the name of the Production company for Sean Hovan. Currently working out of Arlington, VA with five years of video and production services with current employer Creative Video of Washington. Day to day duties at a fulltime company can be a bit confusing because as we know Production is not a 9-5 job. On show days I might be technical directing and setting up for a live multicamera production, shooting media training videos, or running audio for a webcast of a meeting in an auditorium. On non show days my typical duties include updating the company website, taking care of e-bay sales of used equipment, and helping print and burn DVD duplications.
Our History
My desire to be in the television/ AV industry started during my freshman year of College in the fall of 1999. While attending Cuyahoga County Community College in Ohio I took my first TV / Film class and really enjoyed the idea of working in a video production enviroment. After a year at Tri C, I trasfered to The University of Toledo and delcared myself a Communications major with a focus in Broadcast Production. While at Toledo I worked part time for the University Communication Department in co operation with the local cable system in bringing WB Sports programming to Buckeye Cable Sports Network. Friday night Football and Basketball games would become a regular paying job for the remainder of my college career. While at the University, the Communication department also provided video to the scoreboard during University of Toledo Football games. Between high school and college football and basketball games on a weekly basis for over 3 years. I had a great start to my career. In the spring of 2003 I was hired by WTVG 13 ABC Toledo to be the morning microwave truck driver. My duties included driving to our remote location and setting up all the video needs for the local reporter to do the morning news. I really enjoyed this job, but while still in school the 4am mornings were a killer! The Toledo Mud Hens opened their new baseball stadium Fifth Third Field downtown this year and it made my summers even more productive. With no basketball or football to shoot I took a freelance job working for the gameday scoreboard / entertainment team. This would last until September of 2005 when I left for Washington DC.
After I graduated from College in 2003 Buckeye Cable started a new division at their company called Buckeye Cable Sports Network. We would shoot all high school and college sports that were taking place in the area and present it on demand free on the cable system. I was hired as a a director and would go on to direct over 250 sporting events during my two years with the company. This was technically a freelance job, but I was working up to 5 days a week. I also had a passion for news and decided to take a part time job at WNWO NBC 24 Toledo working the morning shift again! This job as a production assistant and kept me in the studio 95% of the time. I enjoyed my time there, and was offered fulltime positions in the engineering and production departments, but with my work at BCSN I turned down several offers. This is around the time I started getting involved in IHRA and USAR racing production.
Working three jobs and living in Toledo, Ohio might SOUND glamarous, but it takes a toll on you. I also missed living in the big city (Cleveland at the time) and outside of work I always wanted to move back home or to a major city. In the summer of 2005 I was contacted about a job opening in Washington DC for Creative Video of Washington. I drove down and had an interview and later accepted a job as the Producer / Director of live events for CVW. With one fulltime job with somewhat normal hours (for our industry that is.) I moved to the Vienna, VA area as our company is based in Tysons Corner and never regret that decision. Washington has a lot to offer outside of working in production, and is a great place to live. I would like to use this website to let producers and crewing companies know that not only do I have experience in a corporate setting, but I also have a solid background on shooting sports.
Future Plans
I am scheduled to take my CTS exam on August 15th, 2010 in Washington, DC and hope that continuing education will lead to better things as a freelancer and in my professional career. I have no plans of leaving Creative Video at this time, but would love to do more sporting events that would take place in the summers. The summers are slow at work and I would have better availability to work during that time of year. I plan on staying in the Washington DC area and would like to stay available for future work.
